Feeling defeated today
I had a big family day today. Having lost 13 pounds I expected at least a few people to immediately say, "wow, you look great. You lost weight!" But low and behold, every room we walked into, everyone looked at my husband David and said to him "wow, you look great. You got so skinny." He has lost weight. He was never as overweight as I am/was, and lost most of it 6 months to a year ago.

To the first person, my father, I actually said "what am I chopped liver?!" After that I just quietly got nauseous.

I ...

What the Scales Don't Tell You
garcia
garcia
Victoria's day begins by stepping on her bathroom scale. How she feels that day depends on what the scale tells her. Victoria has a number in her mind that corresponds to what she thinks is her ideal weight. No matter how healthy or fit she feels, she is not happy unless she weighs that weight. She berates herself for not having the willpower to reach that "magical" weight. She feels like a failure because her friend, Anna, who is her same height, weighs less. But is she really a failure, or is she a victim of unrealistic expectations and misconceptions ...

Did anybody notice?

Hello all you NM's out there. Did anyone else notice that between yesterday and today we collectively GAINED 25 POUNDS?
I was guilty of 2.0 of it. I had been green and expected to stay the same or lose a fraction and was shocked when I stepped on the scales yesterday. This morning 1.2 of it was gone so I have no idea what caused the gain. Perhaps the world was a bit out of sync yesterday. Hope all of you are doing better this morning.

Getting Started
Kaeawc
Kaeawc
It seems most people who are concerned about their weight are looking to lose some weight. I sometimes feel awkward being myself and either overhearing such conversations or complaints about wanting to exercise more or eat less... because for the past 6 years I've been rather thin. My goal is actually to gain weight.

At one point during this past year I was dangerously thin. 138 lbs to be precise. At 5'11" it was just unhealthy, I never had energy and on the day of midterms this past November I was literally passing out. It wasn't from starving myself intentionally... I ...

Weigh In and stuff!
USAndyD

Weigh In and stuff!I weighed in this morning after a week of green and red days, a week of limited exercise, and another week of being on the road in mostly lousy weather.

I gained 2 pounds which wasn't a surprise considering all of the things I just mentioned. Now that I am in a better climate I hope to be able to get back to the exercise and a better choice of foods.

The picture is of the place where the river sinks underground. 900 million gallons of water a day go down and then flow underground for about three miles where they rise ...

SO I went to the doctor today, the OB/GYN - to discuss possibly starting a family. My weight is 294 and BP 145/98 - wowzers. who knew it was that high! this was a true hit to me. I knew i was heavy, i felt the lbs before, hell my weight was higher last time i did this but i didn't let it sink in. Its hard to hear that my future is on hold until i get myself in check. However, I needed to hear it to get me motivated but its terrifying. a friends wife died this weekend. ...

Last night I dug up our old scale. I am saving up my pennies to purchase a new one from the NM store. I want one that gives you your body composition. I know that the scale alone isn't always the best way to track my progress. Anyway, I had to go to the store to purchase some new batteries, and then I weighed myself. I weighed 5 pounds less than my doctor told me I weighed on Oct. 26th. (I think she rounded the number up, plus there is probably a difference in the scales)This morning I woke up ...

I am about to take back my life
MamaMina28
MamaMina28
I have been living for 28 years in my body. I take care of my body but have allowed myself to "give up" not really paying attention or caring about the foods that I put into my body. I have very good health despite me being overweight. I rarely get sick or anything. I notice that I am tired. I know that my excess weight is because my job is sedentary. I HATE DESK JOBS!!!!

So I decided to take back my life. I am making sure that if i have junk i am limiting it to one day per week ...

On the calculation of ideal body weight based on the bioelectrical impedance method of body fat measurement - a manuscript for your consideration
I and many others seek to answer the question, "what is my ideal weight?" As a recovering scientist, I decided to approach the problem mathematically using hard data. The following is a proposed method for calculating ideal body weight based on a few simple measurements and calculations which are easily repeatable for various subjects.

Many scales are capable of measuring body fat and water content using the "Bioelectrical Impedance" method. This method works by having the subject stand on, or hold onto, two metal sensors which measure the electrical resistance of your body. Because electricity travels differently through water, fat, muscle, ...

Second weight goal achieved! Now what?
So, I weighed myself this morning, not expecting anything special, and the scale finally dipped below 180! This was my intermediate weight loss goal (I insisted on getting to 200lbs, my ideal would be around 160, so my trainer suggested 180 as a happy medium) and now I'm not sure what to do.

I'm pretty happy eating between 1600-1700 calories a day, so I set my goal based on that instead of a weight. I had been pretty stagnant in my weight loss, but in the last week or so I've dropped a couple pounds again without really trying! I ...

Finally! Visitors with no weight gain!
We've had a string of visitors this summer, and we're going to have a few more. Every time people come up for a long weekend we spend a lot of time walking, but we also spend a lot of time eating out. As a result (even though I've been counting to the best of my ability) my weight has been back and forth around a spread of 4 pounds. Well, my in-laws are leaving today and I weighed myself this morning: it was exactly the same as the day they came! ...

How to weigh the fruit?
ikg-88

Fruits with pits or cores... what's the deal with them?

I weigh my lunch fruits in the morning and then happily munch them at work. Obviously, for apples and nectarines and most of the fruits I take, I can't eat the core or the pit, so should I be subtracting a bit from the weight I enter in the morning?

How is the nutrition data calculated on those? Am I overthinking this? ...

My doctor was pleasantly surprised...
She came in, looked at her computer screen and said:

"Well, unless I have the wrong chart, you've lost a significant amount of weight!" (I'm now down 80lbs from this time last year)

She happily downgraded my file from "morbidly obese" to "overweight", and asked me how I was achieving this seemingly miraculous weight loss without surgery. I told her about NM, and she said she'd always referred people to another website, but she'd have to check this one out. I bragged about the awesome community and support we get here. I showed her my calorie and nutrient balance print-out for the ...

I have been struggling with the same 2 lbs for a long time now, and a couple of days ago i finally broke the 146 and weighed 145.2...today I'm back at 146.2 lbs...

I would like to get down to 135...I have been at 135 for the most of my adult life so I know its possible.
I know I'm not 19 anymore and maybe 135 is not realistic, and thats okay...but it got me thinking about body fat range etc..

I tried about 7 " Home Body Fat Test" and and came to an average of 22.5% body fat which according to ...

"Normal" people just don't understand...**RANT**
I spent last week on a mission trip rehabbing homes in the Appalachian mountains in Kentucky. I was worried about the food on the trip, but it turned out to be ok, what with working 10 hours a day on construction, the daily fare of cereal, fruit, PB&J, and whatever was for dinner was just about right. I did indulge in a little desert just about every night, but over-all I know I stayed well below maintenance calories. What turned out to be a nightmare was the two days of travel before and after the trip! 10+ hours in a ...

Hi guys, I need someone to look into my logs and see what is going on there. I have been more or less green on just about everything lately. I do most of my expanding of calories on weekends while I also try to incorporate as much as possible of walking during the working days. I don't go over on sodium hardly ever. I have an alcoholic drink maybe a couple of times a week (a small glass of red/white or beer).

I have switched from when I started here in March to eating more snacks and less during main ...

What your REAL goal weight should be
jackretired

Here are 4 formulas, pick the one that sounds good to you.

1. How much did you weigh when you graduated from high school.

2. Take the answer to 1 above and add a half pound for each year over 50 years of age.

3. (men only) number of inches of height from 5 ft. times 6. Now take that number and add 106.

4. (women only) number of inches of height from 5 ft. times 5. Now take that number and add 100.

P.S.
If your fingers will NOT reach around your wrist, add 10%$ for big bone structure. ...

Pounds down & Inches up?
MAD_SAD_MOM
MAD_SAD_MOM
Riddle me this, Batman.

Why do I lose weight, but not a lot of size?

My waist, hip, bicep, thigh, and chest measurements are all within an couple of inches of my starting measurements after losing 25 pounds.

I try to measure weekly, and this week I dropped another two pounds and my measurements are actually up about a half inch all around.

What's the deal?

Most people gain weight and lose inches as they gain muscle.
I seem to lose weight and gain flab.
It's just not right.

I am losing in clothing size. I've gone from a well-fit size 20 to a loose 18 (or tooo ...

Fast Food choices
tmcdermott
tmcdermott
I answered this question for a fellow NM member and thought I'd share my two cents. I don't often have to eat fast food (stay at home mom), but I know it's the fastest, easiest, convenient and cheap way to eat lunch when you're working and on the go. I've been there too, however, I weighed about 30 lbs more than I do now too!
First, look up the websites in advance for the nutritional value of your food options and stash them in your car. That way you can drive thru and not have too much pressure on yourself to ...

Weight loss on a week delay?
Last week I was really lazy, and while my food choices were ok, I didn't exercise nearly as much as I normally do, and not even close to what I'm supposed to :).

So, last week I lost a pound and a half, even though I was delinquent.

This week I have been working out and eating better. I went to the gym and weighed in today (6 days later) and I haven't lost anything.

Does anyone else see their weight loss is affected not by THAT week's habits, but by the PREVIOUS week? Either that, or my body has hit one of ...

Cleaning out the closet!
My husband had to go to work today, so I'm home alone. I've decided I'm going to turn up my stereo really loud and clean out my closet. Usually when I do this, it's to put away all the clothes that don't fit me anymore because they shrunk or I grew. This time, it will be to pack up all the clothes that are two sizes too big! It's gotten to the point where it takes me 15 minutes in the morning just to find a shirt and pants that don't hang off of me like clown clothes!

Anybody need any ...

An update on me
So, I went to the gym for the first time since Friday, and the good news is I'm down 2 pounds. I had a really long workout (55 minutes on the elliptical) and even did my regular strength training routine which I've been ignoring. I'm supposed to do everything 3 days a week, or 2 if I do yoga, but I've been lucky to get in one. It's really hard to get to the gym in New England in the winter when there's snow everywhere and by the time you get done with work and a workout it's dark outside!

I've ...
