| February 9, 2010, 4:54 pm Our Mission In Life | I know we have already had sites posted in the past, that had tips to reduce our sodium intake. But recent comments and posts indicate that maybe it should be posted again. Also continue to read about my personal experience of finding HIGH SODIUM in a very unlikley source.

I have been dealing with high blood pressure most of my adult life. For quite a while my BP was totaly out of control. Doctors basicly had me on a salt-free diet, and was as emphatic, about me drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day, as Biking ... |

Several NM Members have mentioned sodium problems or don't seem to be losing weight and in looking at the food logs are running over 1500 mg or are red under sodium. The American Stroke Association is also promoting the 1500mg sodium recomendation for nearly everyone:
March 26, 2009 – New data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides additional scientific evidence that the majority of Americans over the age of twenty should limit the amount of sodium (salt) they consume daily to 1,500 milligrams (mg) to prevent ... |

YOU HELPED ME GET MY HOME PAGE GREEN!!! And I just wanted to write and thank you all for your help & support (read help & support: "NM flogging")!
A little while back I wrote this post:
Its the Devil I tell you!
Your suggestions & support helped me get my homepage this FABULOUS shade of green! One of the suggestions that really helped was eliminating the turkey I was eating for lunch everyday... I replaced that with lower sodium options, including a (duh!)low sodium turkey - who knew? - You all helped me get my sodium in check ... |

lorijrcamp | Wow, I have done really well with the sodium issue. I do not salt anything, I eat lots of fresh fruit and veggies, I buy low salt or no salt added canned goods. Yeah me! Well yesterday I saw no salt added cottage cheese. I bought it. I just ate my half a cup with an orange and boy does it need salt. Yuck! So bland. I will take my sodium with my cottage cheese please. That is one item that I will not purchase again. :) ... |
continue reading 6 comments July 22, 2009, 11:06 am How We Know What Isn't So | While I know we are most often concerned about salt as a water retention agent, I haven't worried about salt since hearing John Stossel squeeze Dr. Jeffrey Cutler (mentioned below) in a 2005 interview on the television show "20/20." Here's Stossel writing about it a bit later:
"The federal anti-salt bureaucracy launched expensive public service announcements that warn Americans to cut back on salt. The ads intoned, ominously, 'You eat more than 20 times the salt your body needs.'
"Eat 'no more than 2,400 milligrams a day,' said Dr. Jeffrey Cutler, the official behind the government's anti-salt campaign. I feel sorry ... |

I once sprinkled so much salt over my food that there was a halo of white surrounding my plate when the table was cleared. I also hoarded fast food salt packets in my glove box so that I would never have to be without the stuff. These days, I am not always sure where our salt shaker is when asked for it.

MAD_SAD_MOM | A friend of mine turned me on to this TJ's item.
It is a bit of a splurge, but oh so yummy.
If you can manage the desire to eat the whole package you should be ok.
Sea Salt Brownies.
Yummy chocolate brownies with sea salt (on top for sure, maybe inside).
Just put them top side down on your tongue for that lovely salty taste then savor the rich chocolate.

1greytmom | Check this out.
Our local news just ran a short news blip about the amount of salt in fast food and other restaurant meals. They said the worst culprits were the Red Lobster Admiral's Dinner, with over 7000mg of sodium in the one meal!!!!!
Here's the text from the story on the news website.

continue reading 9 comments April 13, 2009, 10:12 am American Heart Association recommends lower sodium (duh..) | http://americanheart.mediaroom.com/index.php?s=43&item=700
The American Heart Association recommends most people keep their sodium to a shockingly low (according to my food log) 1200mg a day (the current suggested max is 2300mg/day). This is because many people are salt-sensitive, and this new figure could significantly lower blood pressure and promote heart health.
At least the AHA recognizes that 1200mg is a ridiculous number if you don't make all of your food from scratch, and so they are also going to work with several federal agencies to try to lower the amount of salt added to commercial foods. In the interim, they suggest that everyone at ... |

dollylonglegs | Wow.
I thought I'd make an effort to reduce my sodium, starting by not adding any salt to my food at meals. At this point I've gone about 8 hours and i'm CRAVING salt like nobody's business. I'm literally having to try and stop myself from just pouring salt from the shaker into my hand and eating it straight.
Has anyone else gone though this kind of ridiculous withdrawal while starting to limit sodium intake? Given my low low blood pressure, I'm concerned that my salt craving isn't due to my body just readjusting to less sodium but that my body actually ... |
