I Cried With So Many of You Last Night!
I Cried With So Many of You Last Night!I received my copy of BDBL yesterday.

I have been so busy opening a new business that I have not had time to do much of anything. Last night when I was crawling into bed, I opened the book. There I sat, for the next two hours, unable to put it down. I laughed, I cried, I got choked up and cried some more. I have never felt more connected to a group of people than I do right now. Not only did EACH story of the 42 contributors touch me, but I really felt this overall sense ...

Mention of Nutrimirror
Melissa71
Melissa71
I was trying to search a topic in journal posts as per Ima's suggestion, when I came across an interesting find. It seems that Uniformed Services Academy of Family Physicians had a seminar by Lt Col Tammy J Lindsay in Feb this year on managing diabetes type 2, and nutrimirror got a mention as a lifestyle tool.

Google it: Lindsay - Type 2 Diabetes Update: How Sweet Life Is

It brings up the presentation. The word is spreading :) ...

Stress...

LOQuent
So I have two questions today...

What should you eat or drink after a really stressful situation?

I was walking my dog and when I was about to get home, my neighbor's pitbull ran out and just grabbed my yorkie by the neck and wouldnt let go! My neighbor ran out and just beat the crap out of it until it did then my dog ran all the rest of the way home bleeding. Me and my dad took him to the vet and he got stitches so he is pretty good now but my stomach is soooo messed up. Any suggestions?

Scheduled Maintenance
Hi everybody. Just a heads up:

Beginning late tonight (Friday) and possibly through the weekend, I'm going to be doing some maintenance work on the site's journaling system. Community posts may become inaccessible during this time, but don't panic! I won't be taking away or adding any new features, but I'm hoping to make some of the hamster wheels run more smoothly behind the scenes. If we're lucky this won't be too much of an inconvenience.

Thanks! ...

Good Doctor Visit. Thanks NM!

Just a quick note to say that my doctor visit this morning made me very happy. He told me that I was making good progress and he was impressed with NutriMirror.

I explained to him how I've learned so much about nutrients, caloric values and my body. I also can adjust daily calories when I can't water jog or do more intense activity. I'm also reading labels, too. He said to keep it up!

THANK YOU NUTRIMIRROR!

Site Suggestions

Hi everybody,

I want to start by thanking you all for your support of NutriMirror. Every member makes this site a better place, and we love hearing your thoughts and helpful advice here in the journal community.

As you know, the site is constantly growing and developing. We have big plans for things we'd like to do in the future, but we'd also like to hear any ideas you have.

I'll make this a permanent post so that you'll always be able to come back to it any time you have a new thought. You'll find it under the more heading, just above

New Feature: Hiding
Hi everybody. I don't want to make a big deal about this, but after some of the recent tension in the room I've finally implemented a feature that's been requested a few times. You now have the ability to "hide" any users whose posts and comments, for one reason or another, you don't want to see as you browse the site.

You'll find the "hide this person" link on every member's page, just below the links for About, Pictures, Journal, etc. Click it, and all of that member's activity will be hidden from you. And of course you'll be able to ...

New activity
I'm testing a new feature today. You might see a link in the right-hand column called "new activity." This should take you to any recent posts you've written or commented on that have comments you have not yet reviewed.

I'm not 100% sure this is working properly yet, so let me know if you notice any funny business. ...

Nutrition facts database
ikg-88
ikg-88
Is there any way to make the nutrition data open to everyone? I'm thinking of a kind of wiki here, since there are some that are only off by a little, probably because the company has changed things up a bit.

For others, it's a matter of titling and descriptions, along with serving size. Re-entering an item from scratch feels so time-consuming when there's something already there that's almost right.

What are the odds of something like this coming to pass? What benefits have I forgotten? What problems have I ignored? ...

NutriMirror and Kids
The question came up a few times last week about whether NutriMirror works for people under 18, or whether we planned to create a version of the site for kids or teens. While there have been discussions about that, it's not anywhere near the top of the to-do list.

However, I wanted to give you all some background about why a teen/children site would be different from the current site, and why NutriMirror requires members to be at least 18 years old. It gets a bit technical with talk of metabolism and nutrient needs and alternative BMI charts, but if you're ...

New Community Search Feature
Here's a new toy for everybody. Take a look in the upper right corner of the page, just beneath the Community picture. You'll see a new search form. You can use this to search the text of all past journals and comments. This should make it much easier to find that post you commented on last week, or the recipe you saw last month. Give it a try and let me know how it works ... I haven't tested it thoroughly yet. ...

Weight Loss Stats
Jessica asked about total weight loss among NutriMirror users. So Kel doesn't have to do the math for everybody, I've created a new page that will update automatically every day. It only counts users active within the most recent six months, so I don't expect to see dramatic changes to the numbers each day. But I've broken out some averages based on how active people are with the system. As you can see, the more you log, the more you lose.

I'll create a better link so you can find this page more easily later, but for now just click below:

Add To Log Page Update
Hi Everybody. It's been a while since I tried to slip in an update to the search code on the site. Some of you might remember what happened last time I did this, but I've got my fingers crossed.

We needed to make some fixes because, depending on the search terms used, items sometimes refused to show up in the results when they should have. I've loosened things up a bit in the other direction now, so you may end up seeing foods that probably shouldn't be in the results. But at least now when you type "chicken with oranges" you'll ...

If you like a FREE NutriMirror, HUG a PHYSICAL THERAPIST

Many of our members wonder how it is we have been able to make NutriMirror® a free service. As you may know, the company I manage, PrePak Products, Inc., provides home-use exercise products to Physical Therapists.

Physical Therapists, like all other health professionals, are directly impacted by the obesity/chronic disease problems in our nation. They recognize that any real solution must focus on lifetime change of individual behaviors. Everyone (including Physical Therapists) needs to act to achieve lifetime caloric and nutritional balance.

Into each of our products we now insert a notice of NutriMirror that links Physical Therapy patients to our website.

Food Search Update, Take Two

After last week's attempted update to the food search code, we rolled back to the previous version to fix multiple problems pointed out by the NutriMirror community. We've been working hard to make the necessary fixes since then, and over the last few days we've been rolling out the latest updates to more and more of our users. As of this afternoon, all of you are now using the new version of the page.

More on the Food Search

Because some of you were having trouble with the new food search code, I've stepped back and replaced it with what we were using before. Hopefully this will solve the issue for now. Let me know if it still isn't working -- and for those who had trouble before, please let me know if this helps.

Also, yes, there were issues with the server last night which made the site difficult to reach for a while. This was unrelated to the search code trouble, and unfortunately made it difficult to know who was being affected by which issue.

Thanks for your patience

Calorie Basis for Percentages

A USER ASKS

I noticed that the %s for the various nutritional measurements are calculated based on my calories for weight maintenance, but I would like to see them calculated based on my calories recommended to reach my WEIGHT GOAL. The green and red in the charts are helpful, but would be even more helpful if they were based on what I need to intake to LOSE! Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

OUR ANSWER

Many of the nutrients that we track have targets that are independent of calories eaten. With cholesterol, sodium, and all the vitamins and minerals, you're looking at fixed numbers,

Site Update

Hi everybody. I'd like to apologize again for the technical issues over the last couple days. We're working our way through this and with a few fixes we should be able to make everything even better than it was.

I've just completed an update to the main Food Log page, and I think you'll notice some dramatic speed improvements there, especially those of you who have logged a lot of foods over the past month.

Again, be sure to let us know of any difficulties you might have. We've been backed up a bit with responding to everything, but rest assured that

Hints
Have you just started using NutriMirror? Here are a few a few suggestions I have found useful.

1. Start out making "small" changes. Small changes are easier to manage and won't overwhelm.

2. Don't throw out your entire pantry only to fill it with strange foods you aren't familiar with. More than likely you will end up throwing them out. How are the foods you are eating now affecting you? Look at your "Reflection Analysis". Would a "portion" change make a difference?

3. Keep measuring cups handy. I have 1/2 cup cups inside my cereal boxes. No more guessing.

4. Invest in a ...
