TRACBALL!
TRACBALL!We have this super fun racket game that we pull out each spring. It really is tons-o-fun and my kids (6, 4) are even able to join in.

It's called Tracball and you can get it from Amazon (CLICK HERE) for only $11.59 per box. Each box has two rackets, two balls--I recommend getting two boxes so at least four can toss the balls around. Everyone has a blast with this game! In fact, back in my not-so-healthy days, we used to play this over many, many beers (see profile pic, circa 2001) with our neighbors. An hour ...

Fun & Fitness for a Good Cause
Fun & Fitness for a Good CauseHey All......I wanted to share with you an annual event in Atlanta that has been expanded to Boulder CO, Steamboat Springs CO, Tallahassee FL, Birmingham AL, and Atlanta GA.

The event is called Ovarian Cycle. The mission of the organization and the event is to raise money for the early detection of ovarian cancer. Once the cancer is detected it can be cured if detected early enough. The challenge is detecting the cancer before it grows too much.

The event is an century ride, 100 miles, which occures in 6 hours in a gym on stationary bikes. Training begins this weekend in ...

I apologize if this is a repeat topic, but today I realized something fairly useful!

If I am going to exercise away 200 calories (or whatever number) I had been thinking that it did not really matter if I took a half an hour or an hour, thinking calories are calories, right?

Not exactly- My net calories from my 30 minute, 200 calorie burn were higher than the same calories from a longer period of time, because of the shorter period of calories I would have used anyway. Make sense? Now I can use my time better, plus my heart rate ...

Pedometer Tuning at the Mall of AmericaWARNING: This is a long trivia filled post that only an engineer can love, but if you ever walk the Mall of America you will want to read this.
The other day I though it would be interesting to start counting my steps, so I dusted off a Pedometer I got for joining AARP. Of course the battery died right away, so I had to go out and buy a new one.
In a related piece of information, for years I have gone walking at the Mall of America (MOA, "Minnesota's Mall of America is the largest, fully enclosed retail and family ...

The final score was....buffet-0, me-1
Yesterday afternoon my wife (denaberg) said to me "we should do something this afternoon, the kids are bored and we need to get some stuff from out of town anyway". After much convincing, I said "ok but what"? "Lets go iceskating" she responded. After much more convincing we were off to the ice arena in a small town 17 miles away. We had fun, my eight year old daughter is a natural, and my five year old son even made it aroung a couple of times.

Is there any rule against exercising on your period???
bassoonist

I have had so much energy just oozing out of my pores lately that I have recently taken up jogging. Yesterday, despite having a case of the monthlies, I felt so good I just had to go jog. And jog I did, for longer than ever before - 20 mins straight. I don't know if it is a good thing or a bad thing to exercise during this time. All I know is that my yoga and pilates videos tell me not to do any inverted or vigorous exercise. I would consider what I did yesterday kinda vigorous. Any thoughts? ...

I would like to log the exercises under the middle section of the exercise page (reserved for running/biking) but am unable to b/c the calculator dashes out the calories burned. I know I can get a general idea from the top section and using the >20mph option but faster than 20 mph doesn't seem like it would be too odd of a pace that others aren't having the same issue. Am I walking or backpacking?
I've decided to park my car for awhile and incorporate walking into my daily commute.

There is a bus stop 2+ miles from my house. Each morning I get up, leave the house at 4:45am and take from 45 minutes to an hour to walk the 2+ miles to the bus stop. The walk covers various terrain. I live in a rural area, so some of the walk to the bus stop is paved road, some is sidewalk, some is the shoulder of the road because the roadway is too thin for me and the cars. I don't have any ...

I am having a very hard time eating only my daily weight-loss calories. So, you probably are thinking, get off of your butt and do some exercise so that you can eat more! The problem is that I wake up every single morning with great intentions of working out, but to no avail. I am just not motivated to exercise, and not just as of late. This has been a lifelong struggle for me.

Getting Started
Kaeawc
Kaeawc
It seems most people who are concerned about their weight are looking to lose some weight. I sometimes feel awkward being myself and either overhearing such conversations or complaints about wanting to exercise more or eat less... because for the past 6 years I've been rather thin. My goal is actually to gain weight.

At one point during this past year I was dangerously thin. 138 lbs to be precise. At 5'11" it was just unhealthy, I never had energy and on the day of midterms this past November I was literally passing out. It wasn't from starving myself intentionally... I ...

Trouble with logging & using my heart rate monitor
melita1040
melita1040
I know I've seen this discussion before but when I searched for it I couldn't find it--so, here I am asking (AGAIN!):
When I use the NM estimates for my usual yoga class with walking on the treadmill after, I usually burn about 210 cal for yoga and 90 for walking (minus the maintenance) and that has seemed to work in the overall balance and scheme, though I do seem to lose more weight than I would have expected.
I put my HRM on tonight to see if I could get a more 'accurate' reading. What a shock! My combined total ...

I am curious if any of those who weight train, and are on maintenance specifically, experience much in the way of weight gain. I have not had a lot of time to read up on the topic, but I have noticed some upward trends in weight myself.

I am not overly concerned as I am in my 5th week of P90x so I have been using weights 3 times a week. I use slightly lighter weights and go for 12-15 reps per exercise as it is not my intention to gain size. The other 2 days I do Zumba and the ...

So now after only having breakfast, I have about 2000 calories to play with. I know it's not a blank check... I'm still not green in most of my categories, so I'll work on that at lunch. Still, calorie-wise, it gives me some room for a few indulgences.

Exercise Confession
I do not enjoy exercising. Or, maybe it's just that I'm lazy. There it is. It's out there now, and now it's time to find a way to start enjoying exercise, or to get motivated to start again and keep at it.

During the summer, as some of you may recall, I started walking, and I kept at it regularly ... until the weather changed. And, then the excuses started. I'd read journal posts, particularly Kel's, about ridding ourselves of excuses, or all the JFT posts, and I knew everyone was right, but I still gave in to the excuses. Those ...
