Taking a moment

Mom and I have a weekend ritual. On Saturday and Sunday mornings we have what we refer to as, "civilized coffee". We're half joking with that title, but what we do is take the time to sit, chat, and enjoy the morning. There is no agenda, but this does seem to be our best time for ideas and brainstorming. We're definitely morning people and the creativity flows at that time (I however, do not speak until after my first cup).

Effort is put into creating a pleasant environment. We get pleasure from pretty things -not perfect things, but things that are comforting and pretty. So for civilized coffee we use cups and saucers from our vintage collection, mom's nonfat milk and my 1/2 n' 1/2 (an accounted for treat -say hey kel!) are placed in ceramic pitchers and it's all put on one of our vintage trays.

Does it seem silly to go to such effort for coffee and an hour and half of visiting? It might to some. For us it’s completely worth it. We plan these mornings, agreeing to wake early if necessary, just so we can begin the day slowly and thoughtfully. Our studio is open seven days a week, therefore one of us is always there while the other is at home either sewing or cooking. With such full schedules, taking little moments is important.

You may be thinking, “okay it’s cute, but what does this have to do with achieving my goal?” For some it won't mean a thing; on the other hand for others it might strike a chord. You may be thinking that you too are worth a pretty cup and saucer and good conversation. And just maybe if you think you are worth your own version of civilized coffee, you will see that you are also worth civilized breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
