Also, as before, if you go over the 2,000-character limit, the comment box should clue you in by not letting you type any more.
Let me know if you continue to have trouble with this. Thanks. ... |

November 4, 2009, 9:39 pm updated Nov 4, 2009, 10:26 pm Adventures in Web Serving — Update | Well that was a fun day.
I don't even know how to begin to tell you all we've been through since about 6 a.m. this morning, but I'll just summarize by saying that we're finally on our new web server, a few days earlier than our much-delayed plan.
Whoopee?
Anyway, there are still problems, mainly this: Most of you can't log into the site.
As a temporary fix, you can try issuing a new password here:

One caution with this, though: If you don't have access to the email address associated with your NutriMirror account, this will send your new passwords ... |

Most basic site functions should be running properly now, but there are still a few things I need to fix.
I'll continue to look through your comments below to take care of any errors you find.

Microsoft seems to have invented a new problem for us today. If you're using the Internet Explorer browser, you might be having trouble logging your exercises using Method One. Until I can get this working properly again, you'll have better luck if you try an alternate browser like Firefox or Safari.
If these aren't already on your computer, you can download them for free here:

Download Safari
UPDATE: I think I may have tracked down the magic unicorn that granted my wish and made Internet Explorer behave like a good web browser should. Let me know if ... |

I'm aware that some of you are having trouble posting foods to your log today. I suspect that this is related to the switch to Daylight Savings Time.
As a temporary workaround until we can get this straightened out, try following Poopie's suggestion and go to a day in the past, before you joined, to log your day there. You'll be able to use the "make menu" option to quickly transfer the data to the correct day once we get this straightened out.
Thanks! ... |
continue reading 7 comments October 27, 2009, 9:11 am Home from Texas | We flew back into LAX last night on a rain-delayed flight from Austin, so it's back to catching up on all the NutriMirror activity I missed while I was gone. I want to thank you all for the best wishes you sent our way. We had a fantastic time in a fantastic city. The conference was amazing, with the most helpful, friendly people you would want to know. We didn't take home the trophy, although it was close, but we took plenty of names — great, inspring film industry contacts who will be a lot of help to us in ... |

We weren't able to finish the work we were hoping Sunday evening, so we'll be taking the site down temporarily again on Monday at 9:30 p.m. Pacific time. Plan your logging accordingly!
Update: Because I'm having trouble today with my office Internet connection, I don't want to risk any critical work on the server that might get interrupted. So I'll be rescheduling this job for sometime next week. Again, I'll let you all know ahead of time. Thanks for your patience, as always! ... |

Please don't panic! I'm not sure how long this will take, but with luck everything will be running smoothly by the time you wake up tomorrow. Sorry for the inconvenience. ... |

If all goes according to plan we should be moving the site to the new server over the coming weekend. We'll need to take the site offline for a while during that time, but I don't expect any major problems with the transition. I'll post a notice ahead of time so you'll know when to expect that. Once we're back up and running, the new server should go a long way toward helping us address the site outages we've been ... |

Runners are baring their very soles
"Ouch!" "Oooh!" "Oww!" "Omigod, that hurts!" Those grunts of pain and anguish weren't coming from us -- a group of 10 people running barefoot on a concrete pathway at Central Park in Huntington Beach early one recent Saturday morning. They were being emitted by a grimacing group of shoe-wearing, dog-walking women who were staring at us as we passed.
But surprisingly, it didn't hurt |

I just want to let everybody know that I'll be looking into this today. In the meantime, though, don't let this stop you from logging. You all should still be able to find your foods. All you have to do, if you're browsing a subcategory, is type a few characters from your search term into the box. That should ... |

August 20, 2009, 10:10 am updated Aug 21, 2009, 5:35 pm Heart Rate Monitors | Hi everybody,
Since there's always lots of talk about Heart Rate Monitors, I'm going to create this page as a more permanent feature so we can all benefit from keeping the discussion in one place. I've started off by creating a few links for HRMs that have been talked about lately. If you use any of these, go ahead and tell us what you think of them in the comments below. If there are other monitors that you use or want to know more about, let me know and I'll update the list. Thanks!

Times has a response today to the story in Time magazine last week that claimed exercise wouldn't make you thin. The L.A. Times story covers a lot of the same ground discussed here at NutriMirror last week.
Hey, Time, 'Exercise won't make you thin'? What were you thinking?
Fitness and health experts say Time magazine got it wrong this week with its cover story, "Why Exercise Won't Make You Thin." The story argues that even though more people than ever are exercising, obesity rates are still rising. Moreover, the article posits that exercise backfires as |
continue reading 7 comments August 6, 2009, 1:59 pm Grocery IQ iPhone App | Erintklein's post about grocery lists reminded me of something I use all the time that some of you might like (well ... those of you who have an iPhone).
It's a 99 cent app called Grocery IQ. It's an easy, paperless grocery list that automatically organizes your shopping items by grocery aisle. You can add items in seconds, and knock them off your list with a click or a swipe. It also keeps a list of your favorites and shopping history so you can quickly put items you use regularly back onto your main list.

continue reading 8 comments August 4, 2009, 5:23 pm NutriMirror and Kids | The question came up a few times last week about whether NutriMirror works for people under 18, or whether we planned to create a version of the site for kids or teens. While there have been discussions about that, it's not anywhere near the top of the to-do list.
However, I wanted to give you all some background about why a teen/children site would be different from the current site, and why NutriMirror requires members to be at least 18 years old. It gets a bit technical with talk of metabolism and nutrient needs and alternative BMI charts, but if you're ... |

You'll notice a new button next to each meal on your food log: Make Menu. If you click it, whatever you ate for that meal will instantly be converted into a menu, allowing you to add those items to your log in a snap on any other day.
These menus work just like your existing menus, so after you've created ... |

continue reading 18 comments June 24, 2009, 10:14 pm Weight Loss Stats | Jessica asked about total weight loss among NutriMirror users. So Kel doesn't have to do the math for everybody, I've created a new page that will update automatically every day. It only counts users active within the most recent six months, so I don't expect to see dramatic changes to the numbers each day. But I've broken out some averages based on how active people are with the system. As you can see, the more you log, the more you lose.
I'll create a better link so you can find this page more easily later, but for now just click below:

continue reading 33 comments June 24, 2009, 4:32 pm Add To Log Page Update | Hi Everybody. It's been a while since I tried to slip in an update to the search code on the site. Some of you might remember what happened last time I did this, but I've got my fingers crossed.
We needed to make some fixes because, depending on the search terms used, items sometimes refused to show up in the results when they should have. I've loosened things up a bit in the other direction now, so you may end up seeing foods that probably shouldn't be in the results. But at least now when you type "chicken with oranges" you'll ... |

I have a question regarding fat and the nutrition labels…
Take the "New York Strip Steak Grilled (Home Made)" label for example. It states that there is a total of 8 grams of fat and it shows that there is 3 grams of saturated fat. Where is the other 5 grams of fat?
Surely it's not mono or poly unsaturated fat, or worse yet a trans fat, some labels show all the fats and the grams still don’t always add up to the total fat.
So what's the deal is there some secret fat out there? It doesn't matter what |
continue reading 7 comments May 25, 2009, 11:22 am Back from Vacation | Hi everybody. Some of you may have heard that I was away last week. I was surprised to find decent enough reception from my campsite in Yosemite, so I was able to check the site once or twice a day from my iPhone. It was good to see everything holding together without me.
The trip was lots of fun. We hiked up with our gear from the main valley floor to Little Yosemite Valley, and made our camp there. Then for the next few days we made day hikes in different directions. It's beautiful out there |

NutriMirror emails are currently bouncing back to all users with accounts at AOL. This includes our automated logging reminders, emails that you request for password reminders, and personal communications directly from us to individual members.
We're working to get ourselves removed from AOL's blacklist, but we're at their mercy here and we don't know how long it will take to clear this up. Unfortunately this does create a problem for our loyal members who have AOL addresses. In the meantime, you may be able to override the blacklist by manually approving messages from nutrimirror.com, although I'm not sure whether AOL ... |

I don't know if NutriMirror is the best place for this, but since y'all asked ... this is a story I wrote about a dozen or so years ago when I was working as an entertainment reporter for a newspaper that, as far as I know, is still in business. The political references are dated — and they were made up to begin with — and the links are probably dead, but there you go.
Oh, and keep in mind what while they're now making green peeps, they certainly aren't "green."
Peeps!
