Duck ... Here Come the Holidays!

One of the very first posts we got after opening the Journal Room in January of this year was from David Gouldthorp (of "Senior Moments" fame). He got six comments to his post and we thought "gee, maybe this Journal Room thing might catch on".

It was a post about the perils of holiday eating. With Thanksgiving and Christmas fast approaching, it somehow seems appropriate to repost "Healthy Christmas ... Bah Humbug".

I've also asked David to write a special Thanksgiving piece with suggestions for avoiding some of the holiday pitalls. Early in that article he says this:

"Ok, ok, the truth ... after two years of gradually gaining weight, the aftermath of Thanksgiving dinner was my wake-up call when the buttons of my shirt started calling out to the buttonholes for docking directions".

Gouldthorp is a humerous (and wise) man. You can read the entire piece on Sunday in his Guest Column. (Look for the farmer with pitchfork). Until then, here's his first post to the Journal Room to whet your appetites.

I hope you will use the occasion of David's Sunday post to begin posting your own ideas for healthy dishes and tips to get us through these perilous holiday times mostly intact. Together, NM family, we can do it!

Healthy Christmas - Bah Humbug.....

The family had a little pre-Christmas get-together at one of the children's homes on the 23rd; it's always fun to catch up with everyone on all the news, gossip and such while munching on finger food and nibblies.

After I surveyed the dining room table which was loaded with goodies, I decided to run a few of the delicacies through the database on this site.

Well..

Buffalo chicken casserole - high fat and high cholesterol. Had to pass.

Stuffed mushrooms with a cheese crust - ditto. Pass again.

Wantons stuffed with hot sausage and cream cheese. Hmmm. Tempting, but regrettably, no.

Those little cocktail sausages - heart attack on a stick!

Summer Sausage - triple bypass in a box. Ho Ho? No No!

Cajun shrimp, my favorite. Cholesterol overload.

Sweet potato casserole - would have been ok except for the equal parts of butter, brown sugar and a couple of bags of marshmallows. Suicidal.

Gallons of either punch or sweet tea - not tonight, Josephine.

You know, a grown man should never be seen weeping in public....
