Denaberg: 1200 cal. Reply

My reply to Dena's thoughtful post waas too long and time consuming for a reply. So, here it is.
------------------------------------------------
My suggestion for most people would be that they begin be selecting a weight loss amount/target date that reduce 500 calories from their weight maintenance calorie allotment. This leads to a sensible rate of one pound per week of weight loss.

Then, I would further suggest that 1200 number as the lowest number of calories to consume in a day. The National Institue of Health (NIH) allows 1,000-1,200 as the bottom number. NM uses the higer end (1200) as a conservative safety buffer agains bad estimates of portion sizes, exercise entries etc. (Severe calorie deprivation, unless for medical reasons and directly monitored by health professionals, is not a wise road to follow).

Also, we feel that the closer one is to the maintance level calorie number, the easier it will be for them to transition from the weight loss phase to maintenance. And, more calories makes the journey easier to manage.

Fianlly, rapid weight loss is not the proven formula for long-term success rates.

NM is not ABOUT weight loss; it is AOBUT life long weight control and nutritonal balance.

Thank you dena for putting this very important subject into play. I look forward to reading all the replies you get to your post.
