NutriMirror Staff![]() male, 68 years old fallbrook, CA | NutriMirror NewsNovember 5, 2009, 9:54 am "Green in All Aspects": What to Do?Thank you N Baker for your provocative "Green in All Aspects" post. Obviously, it touched a chord in me. I tried commenting at your post but timed out. And, since it is a subject I think of often (most every day just because I live in the same world all of you do) and becasue I own the microphone, I thougt I'd respond more broadly. I'd like to hear what others have to say about what you and I are thinking.----------------------------------------------- Nbaker, Now you've gotten me started on a favorite mind-reel I never talk about here (or anywhere else). Thanks for the opening. I've felt that most every large problem we face as a nation can be traced back, in large measure, to individual human behavior: homelessness, crime and crowded prisons, educational failures, dysfunctional families, unloved or unwanted children, pollution and our sick environment, chronic disease and crippling health care costs, etc). When enough people consistently make choices out of our baser "instant gratification" impulses (greed, anger, uncomitted sex, gluttony, sloth, pride, envy, etc) the larger societal problems ensue. For example, the extension of the eating/exercise choices we make that satisfy our impulses for convenience and instant taste gratification but leave our bodies unsatisfied (fat and sick) and our minds unhappy are responsible for the health problems now overwhelming the nation. This site and the people here are proving that with real-time measured feedback people can and will often make decisions in their own best interest (and by extension, the interest of the nation). Why is it that Washington DC is seen by so many as the exclusive or primary answer to what are, essentially, problems of individual human behavior? I think the English essayist John Dryden (if I’m not mistaken) had it right when he said “the proper study of mankind is man”. Why do we never address that fact when we consider solutions to our “national" issues? We need a magazine/books devoted to that study of mankind, I think. And, we also need a magazine that combines practical things like eating well and physical activity with the NM tool that so empowers us. Metaphorically, if we can gain control over the baser human impulses that have created our health problems, might we also be able to do the same for the behaviors that drive our other national problems? I want to publish a magazine about the NM experience one day. My question is this: Is it a healthy living magazine like Eating Clean; or is it mostly a human behavior magazine that is centered on the subject of your post and this reply. What to do, family? The subject of the post you've written keeps me awake at night.
