What size should I be?
I know a lot of people will disagree with my motivations for this post, but I can't help the way I feel sometimes. It's probably better to write about it and get feedback than to let it stew. NYLatinJazz's post about weight-loss wardrobe really has me hung up. In the WebMD article she sites in her blog, it claims that a clothing size is equivalent to about 8-10 pounds. I'm just not seeing it. I know it depends on your body type and where you lose weight from, but for me, a clothing size has been more like 20 pounds! ...

Do recommended vitamin amounts change for pregnant women?
Maybe my brain is just dumb this morning, but does the amount of iron or calcium or any other vitamins change when a woman becomes pregnant? All I can seem to find online is recommendations about taking more iron or folic acid, but not whether the actual required numbers change. Like, right now 100% of my calcium is 1000mg. Should that number go up when I become pregnant? ...

Triple Threat
Oh my gosh. I feel like I've been hit by a bus.

Had a killer yoga session on Wednesday that's still affecting my muscles. Lets just say I got my foot behind my head. Both of them.

Starting my time of the month today. Cramps so bad they make it hard to stand at times. Fun stuff.

AND, to top it all off, my husband gave me his cold.

I'm thinking I'm just going to log what I eat this weekend but not stress too much about the quality or quantity. I feel crummy enough already without debating for an hour what I'm going ...

Repost: Recycle your jeans at the Gap and get 30% off
So, I looked it up online, and until Sunday the Gap is offering 30% off on a purchase (presumably one item?) if you bring in a pair of old blue jeans to recycle. A perfect excuse to get rid of those old jeans that don't fit anymore!

30% off at the Gap when you recycle old jeans!
Has anyone else heard about this? I heard an ad on the radio this morning that said if you bring in any old pair of jeans to the Gap (and they don't have to be Gap jeans) they give you 30% off an item. The recycle the cotton in the jeans into insulation for low-cost housing. Sounds like a good deal for those three-sizes-too-big jeans hanging in your closet! ...

Cravings :(
Help!

I've been craving food and mostly eating whatever I want all day! I have enough calories left for dinner, at this point, but I need to just stop eating. My stomach actually feels full! (It never does, anymore, because I usually make a point not to over eat!) I made the mistake of going to the grocery store hungry (where I got meatloaf for lunch) and now I'm craving sugar. What's up with me? ...

One chicken, 17 meals, $26
I have been thinking about how people used to be able to use every part of an animal (I even remember my great-grandma picking carcasses clean after meals) This blog post is about a woman who succeeded in making 17 yummy, relatively healthy meals with one chicken. And the best part is it only cost $26!

I just thought I'd share! ...

Looking For Forgiveness
I don't have a lot of time to write. I've been very stressed out lately with school and health and baby issues. I guess I should feel good that I'm not reverting to what I used to do and eating whole bags of Cheetos and 5 sodas a day or something.

My home page calories are almost all read. The nutrient part doesn't actually look that bad (a little high on fat). I was ok doing maintenance, but something has gone horribly wrong. I guess I should feel good that my net calories for the last week are over 36 and ...

Is there anything this oil can't do?
A while back I picked up a bottle of ginger garlic stir-fry oil. It's a canola oil with ginger and garlic infused in it. I love it! I originally bought it so I could make stir fry from scratch with minimal ingredients. (I've made stir-fry sauce from scratch before, and it's a little time consuming and uses little bits of ingredients you might not have on hand, like pineapple juice!)

This summer I discovered you could use the stuff to pan-fry my pork-chops with peaches recipe (check my journals from this summer for the recipe). Today, I had a hankering for ...

Crockpot Help!
I usually don't make things in a crockpot unless I have an explicit crockpot recipe for them. I'm always paranoid that I'm going to under or over cook something.

So, I have this stew recipe I want to make this weekend, but I'd like to let it do it's thing in the crockpot instead of me having to attend to it for an hour or two on the stove. Does anyone (oh, Lynn!?!) have suggestions as to how I could convert this recipe into a crockpot recipe? ...

Questions for Women on Maintenance
I've been eating around maintenance for a few weeks now. For me this means having a small weight loss goal (0.5lbs a week, which I'm not actually losing) and eating somewhere between 200 calories below maintenance and 200 calories above maintenance. So, first of all I want to know if this sounds like what you do, or if you try to eat exactly maintenance every day.

Second, my lady-cycle seems to have settled out now that I've been off BC for a few months. I laughed the other day when I looked at my food log because it was a rash ...

Unexpected Compliments
I was at church early this morning so I could be a discussion leader at our Lenten class. When I got there, my pastor came over to me and complimented me on my style that morning. She said I looked incredible in the last year, and asked how much weight I'd lost. I told her I'd lost about 105lbs so far, but still wasn't at my goal. She looked surprised and asked what my goal was. I replied, "165 lbs, where I was when I started high school."

"165? I wouldn't have put you much over 130!" she replied.

She scoffed when ...

No caffeine or aspartame or spenda.. about to die!
I decided to give up caffeine and artificial sweeteners for Lent. Four days in, and I'm about to die! I've had to give up normal coffee, and diet soda. I didn't really think about it ahead of time, but I've also had to give up most iced tea, since I normally make Earl Grey. About the only thing I've had to drink this week has been sparkling water, plain water, and chamomile tea. I'm so tired of this already! Anyone have any inspired ideas? I am allowing myself to have stevia, and of course sugar is always an option, although ...

Liverwurst
Anyone else eat the stuff? I love it on toasted bread with a big ol' slab of kraft 2% cheese. I know, it sounds gross. 2oz is 25% of my daily iron. The only problem is even the light stuff is 25% of my daily sat fat, and it has a whopping 400% of my daily vit. A, which won't be so great if I get pregnant. But, they had some on sale at the grocery store Tuesday, so I indulged. The deli guy said he'd never had it and asked what it tasted like. I said, "liver." Thanks to ...

Lent starts tomorrow...are you giving something up?
Many religious and spiritual groups use fasting symbolically, as a way to instigate spiritual awareness, or to provoke and confront a feeling of earthly desire in the participant. Lent was originally observed by abstaining from flesh which was wiped out (and therefor deemed unclean) by the great flood. 40 days of raining, 40 days of temptation, 40 days of fasting. Interestingly enough, in the middle ages, not just fish but also animals such as beavers and swans were considered fit to eat during lent because, as the people saw it, they lived near and in the water.. why wouldn't they ...

Vanilla Milk
I've been low on calcium lately, especially since I've switched vitamins. Shame on me for relying on supplements for my calcium!

Anyhoo, I've been solving the problem with a good old glass of milk. I've still yet to try the blackstrap molasses trick, but I pulled out a "recipe" my mom got me started on when I was a little girl

Vanilla Milk:

Milk
Vanilla Extract (I use about 2 cap-fulls per cup of milk)
Sweetener to taste (I use stevia extract, but used to use sugar as a kid)

Mix it together. That's it! If you heat it in a mug it tastes just like ...

Blind Date
Not what you're thinking. We had today off for President's day, so my husband and I went out to lunch and to see Avatar 3D in IMAX. There's a Chili's right in front of the theatre, so we decided to eat there. I was planning on getting the guiltless grill chicken breast platter with brown rice and steamed veggies. I didn't realize they'd changed their menu! I didn't come armed with my usual stack of nutritional info print-outs because (I thought) I knew what I was getting! The only thing they have on the menu is items marked with a ...

Pre-Natal Vitamins?
I know many of you out there are pregnant or trying. I just picked up some prenatal vitamins today at the drug store, and I want to make sure I got a good kind. I checked out some at GNC that had less iron, but they had way too much Vit A (I've heard too much can cause birth defects) and 125% Folic Acid, which also seemed sketchy. The kind I bought at CVS has the recommended numbers from this pregnancy book I have, except it only has 15% calcium.

So, I have two questions for all of you:

1) What ...

OMG! She said yes!
Long story short:

I've been working on my Masters of Science in Science Education at Tufts this year. I'm crazy and have crammed the entire degree into one year plus a couple of summer courses, but it's working and I'm fairly sane.

One of my research advisors started really bugging me about staying for my PhD. My husband and I are really intent on moving home to NC in August so we can be near family and have kids (and afford a house, and not have to shovel snow, etc., etc.). My advisor suggests that I apply to continue into the PhD ...

Feeling bad but feeling better
I've been ravenously hungry the last three days and not feeling so hot. I'm thinking (hoping) it might be due to PMS. People on here have talked about being seriously hungry around their time of the month, but I was curious of hunger really is a symptom of PMS so I Googled it. What I found there made me feel better.

I found women advocating Reeses cup brownies (4 or 5 at a time) to make themselves feel better. I found women claiming that it's ok to eat more while you're PMSing because your body need an extra 500 calories a ...

Exercising during Pregnancy
Yeah, I know what you guys are thinking. Not yet, just getting ready. I am a very inquisitive person!

So, I went to the gym today for the first time since August, and I'm really proud of myself! I did the elliptical for 45 minutes and was on my way to a 12 minute mile when I checked my heart rate and it was 170bpm! Yikes! I backed off a little but it got my wondering.

I've read that if you were physically active before you got pregnant it's ok to continue exercise, as long as it's not too strenuous. That's the ...

Whatever you do, don't make this recipe!
Ok, now that I've gotten your attention, allow me to rant. Kel suggested a wonderful website the other day called tastespotting.com, where I found many delightful (and even good for you) recipes. She even warned that they weren't all "kosher" so to speak.

I came across a recipe for "Microwave Cupcakes" and I was intrigued. The author says "A huge snow storm hit my city today, so I had nothing better to do than to bake up some delicious sweets! I made my favorite microwave cupcake because I was the only one in the house craving cupcakes!" Great! The ingredients are ...

Random BBT Question
Nevermind. I posted a question on here, but I've decided not to be neurotic today. Today's mantra for me will be:

"Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished." - Luke 1:45

Whether religious or not, I believe this verse speaks to me because it says that when faced with the inevitable impossible, you should be confident that you are up to the task. Someone believes in you, so you should believe in you, too! ...

Calling the Bean Goddess!Or anyone else who can help!

I found this really yummy recipe for Lentil Stew:

Click Me!

I entered the recipe into NM with turkey sausage substituted, and this is what the nutrition info looks like. I'm not sure whether this is healthy or not, so I'm asking for advice. The only thing that jumps out at me is the number of calories.. I put it in as 5 servings (the recipe says it makes 4-5). Just how far will a pound of lentils go? What should I do with my old clothes?
I sorted through the 6 bags of old clothes from my back porch today. There were a few items I rescued which are wearable, a few reserved for crafts and dust-rags. I have several pairs of slacks that are going to my best friend in NC. I have two VERY full trash bags which will definitely be going to Goodwill. The question is what to do with the other trash-bag-and-a-half of nice clothes?

They are mostly jeans, slacks, and nice shirts with a few sweaters or skirts thrown in. They are various sizes, mostly 22/24. I'd like to get some money ...
