| Americans thumb their nose at the food pyramid
May 8, 2008 — A Los Angeles Times story today refers to a study in the May issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association that makes the following points:
- Americans don't eat enough fruits and vegetables — and when they do eat a vegetable, it's often a potato. And when they eat a potato, it's often in the form of a chip or a fry.
- Americans eat a lot of grains, but only 10% are whole grains. That number should be 50% or more.
- More than 50% of the added sugars in our diet come from beverages. 37% comes from soda.
It's an interesting article that highlights the shortcomings of the USDA Food Pyramid, and the difficulties of using it to create a healthy diet. Click here to read more. | | —Mike |
