Jim has awarded our team NutiMirror T-Shirts for getting Second Place in the Green Day Challenge!

Jim THANK YOU so much for the NM T-Shirts prize for the Poseidon Team. SWEET. We did work really hard and learned a lot as well. Our last two weeks were all green and yes there were many treats in our food logs too. I think this will make you proud.

Eating your excercise, uh, part 3, I guess....
This has been on my mind as well. My question is a little different. I don't have a problem with eating my regular exercise calories. For instance, my daily 3 mile run is usually just under 300 calories, and most of the time I need them to get my intake allotment above 1200. BUT, when I do a long run or long bike ride on the weekend, sometimes I can burn 500-600 calories for a long run and 1000 calories for a long ride. Then I attempt to eat the calories, and I end up gaining a pound. It has ...

And we're walking....
Hubby and I just got home from work. I didn't plan ahead so I have no idea what to have for dinner. We have a gift card for a local restaurant that hubby has been wanting to use but I've been trying to focus on staying green so I can finally get out of the 180's (I had a bad October...all planned but I still don't have to like the results) I have one more pound to go until I'm officially "overweight" instead of "obese"

He Does Understand, More Than I Realized!
So last night, I get home from the store. My husband was on the phone with my brother-in-law and Mark was raving to him the benefits of NM. He was explaining NM as if he, himself was a member! He explained about eating 3 small meals with snacks in between, etc, etc,. What kind of snacks to eat. I was in the kitchen listening and I laughed and thinking to myself, he has absorbed through me everything he needs to know about eating healthy.

My husband has reduced his intake of diet pepsi. (Thanks to Kel and Ben). He has lost ...

Christmas already? I see RED and GREEN -- sorry for the lengthy rant ;)
So, yesterday I thought was going to be a complete failure of a food day. Today looks better, so lets not be ironic and spoil it.

Yesterday morning I had to run to two elementary schools and help teachers with a LEGO science unit for my research job. I got up late and didn't bring breakfast with me, partially because we were pretty much out of food in the house, and partially because there are a gazillion (no seriously, I've counted them) Dunkin' Donuts between my house and these schools, so I figured somewhere along my journey I'd just pick up ...

Another take on It's Not Fair
At our local township's out-and-back one-mile Main Street road race/fun run, the various groupings were set to go at regularly timed intervals. After the start of the women's race, there was a long delay before the next group was called to the start line. The reason?...a very overweight lady was walking rather slowly towards the finish line. Many of the next wave of runners muttered unkind things to the effect that "fatso's" should be barred from the race. "Who the hell does she think she is, holding everyone up?" was one comment. However, when the lady finally crossed the finish ...

Coco Is Growing!I put our pic in as my profile pic because I just couldn't bring myself to bump Kristal's beautiful tats. Anyway, I've had Coco for 2 months. She is now 6 1/2 months old and weighs 63 pounds. She has her "big girl" teeth, and she is quickly learning to use them. Fortunately, she doesn't chew furniture. She is learning a lot, but continues to charge people and jump on them while doing the "full body wag." We're working on it. I just wanted to let everyone know how proud I am of her. Is there a reliable place to find good nutritional info when it's not in the NM database? I know it won't be perfectly accurate cause there's all sorts of different recipes out there, but close enough for government work.

Not sure if anyone missed me the last 10 days or so, but just wanted to let you know I hadn't deserted you or NM ... I was just sick. Finally today I feel back to my normal self. Thank goodness.

For many of the days I tried very hard and succeeded at being green, but then my cupboards became bare, and I just didn't have the energy to shop or cook, for that matter. Reflections on jims post
I have found the most helpful aspect of NM besides the actual tool itself, is the space it creates for continuous self reflection. Jim, I think that somewhere along the way there has been a shift in our society and we stopped trusting basic truths and instead constantly look to others for our own answers. “Tell me what I need to know, tell me what I need to do, tell me how to solve my problems.” On NM each of us teach ourselves and our learning comes from experiences that give us valuable information WE ACTUALLY NOTICE AND PROCESS. I ...

I did not feel like going to swimming classs tonight. As much as I love it, tonight I am especially tired, it is cold and windy out and I feel like just skipping it. However, I called Dazzle and whined my points (or one might say excuses) to her and she said "Just GO!" So, I put on the swimsuit even though I had a bit of a pouty lip when I did so and shlepped over to the pool, only to find a note taped on the door that said swim class was cancelled. Jim
To touch more on the topic of this post of yours Jim, I have in the last year or so really looked at the way I was living my life. I worked for many years for the SD Zoo and working in that environment seemed to be ideal for me. So many of us (employees) took walks every day and ate a fairly healthy diet, at least most days. I was also very much interested in environmental issues and causes.

When I left that job, and many years later took a job in escrow I was still living in what ...

Doctor's Advice
I think I would definitely get a second opinion if this was my doctor:

A: Your heart only good for so many beats, and that it...don't waste on exercise. Everything wear out eventually. Speeding up heart not make you live longer; it like saying you extend life of car by driving faster. Want to live longer? Take nap.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?
A: You must grasp logistical efficiency. What does cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? ...

"Week ONE" reply
I timed out on you post. We need to get this tiing problem sorted out.

-----------------------------------------------

Exercise certainly helps as it provides you a greater number of calories to eat which makes calorie balancing a bit easier.

Having said that the key to weight loss is calorie control and you can meet those goals without exercise (even though there are lost of reasons for exercising that have little to do with weight).

I hope you make the development of habits you can sustain for a lifetime (that move you to balance) to be a higher priority than losing weight. Finding pleasure ...

The Ripple Effect
Being green when the entire nation around us doesn't seem so healthy can be frustrating. I just wanted to share a little "ripple effect" story from this morning. Being green is catching!

Each morning I walk with my two daughters (5 & 3) and my friend's sons (7 & 5, whom I baby-sit before and after school) to the bus stop. When you post a journal, there are empty boxes at the top of the page (above the headline) that says "Tags"

If you tag a journal entry with descriptive key words, entries may be easily located in a seached if you go to (click here): www.nutrimirror.com/tags. Then, as you can see, every journal that has ever been tagged is searchable. It's kind of neat to see what people have tagged, too.

In particular, it is really helpful (at least to me ;-) when people tag their recipes or info on specific food. That way, when I am wanting to make ...

Falling in love is a feat that usually does not happen overnight. For example, I love to run but I didn’t always feel this way. In days past, I would run because I felt I needed the exercise in order to balance my consumption of all the wrong foods. Over time, being able to tolerate running turned into an occasional “runner’s high.” Now I find comfort in the sound of the rhythm of my feel against the pavement and the resonance of my steadied breath. it's being held at a small church in the poconos, then at Bailey's restaurant--which is a classy joint, but not "formal evening wear" fancy--i went with medium casual cocktail dress....too much?

today i noticed.....
my thighs shrunk!

how weird is that? they look too small to go with my body! it's very strange. i noticed, too, that they feel lost in my wide-leg pants (my favorite style). where did they go? lol.

now, i mean, i'm no stick, but this was really interesting to me. i usually don't look at my thighs and think "hey, they are small!" normally it's "huh, still need to tone them up a bit." today, it was the former!

i feel small today. it's kind of a strange feeling. mostly good. a little strange. ...

Fun Idea
This morning I decided to do somethings a little different. I usually do my wii fit plus then jump on my treadmill today I put the two together and was pleasantly surprised. Both Wii fit and Wii fit plus have basic run aps that allow you to run around WuHu Island without the balance board. You just have to hold or put the wand in your pocket. I brought the treadmill in view of the Tv and took off. I ran better than I have ever run before. Normally I mess with the speed, incline and everything else...I focus on ...

Big News! Triple Digits!
Alright, I'm going to say this because it makes me feel super good about myself!

As of my weigh-in this morning, I am officially 100 pounds lighter than my all-time high of 275 lbs 3 years ago.

I actually lost 10 pounds at that point because I started teaching and my lunch-time class were hellions, and made me so nervous the only thing I could eat for lunch those days was slim fast! But just being on my feet and not in bed for 14 hours a day really helped! (I was severely depressed at the time)

Then, last August was when I ...

It's so frustrating but I can't stop...

I can't stop trying to cram in extra calories after 8 at night and that has me worried.

Which is worse, having a ridiculous surplus of extra calories but not consuming them because it's after 8 OR to try and eat all that I can to meet the calories, getting stuffed and eating much after 8 pm?

I know I need to snack between meals or to try to make my main meals bigger but I just can't do it. I don't feel hungry when I don't eat all my allotted calories but I stopped losing ...

I Was Bad, But All Is Good!
Ok, today I kind fell off the wagon, I was very busy all day doing various house chores and I did not stop to snack (bad girl).

My husband came home this evening after being gone for five days. So I decided to make him one of his favorite cookie recipes, but I heathified it. I used 4 egg whites instead of 3 whole egg, I used 1 white, 1 whole wheat instead of 2 cups white flour, and I added pecans. I would have to say that this is now his favorite cookie. We both had two, whereas before ...

Tummy troubles with iron?
I know I've asked this before, but I feel like I'm getting enough fiber in my diet, but I am still often constipated. It's gotten much worse since I've started taking a multivitamin regularly, and I'm afraid it's going to get even worse in a few months when I start taking a pre-natal (my current vitamins have 100% daily iron, the pre-natals I've seen have upwards of 150%).

Does anyone have any suggestions for regularity? ...

my poor tummy. it's all gurgly! i hate it when it's gurgly. i haven't even had dinner yet! though i will soon, as soon as my fish is out of the oven. fish and peas. what a dinner. ;-) i could probably eat a little more of something else, but i don't really want to. i just want to go back to bed. well, can't do that. back to reading. then a phone date with bettina to talk to ...

Do you eat backwards? What are you teaching your children?
My mother was born in 1921. She was 8 years old when the great depression began. A few short years after it "ended" she joined the army as a nurse, and shipped off to England during WWII. This means that for most of her life prior to having children she was "making do" with too little of everything. I even had some of her old ration stamps until my husband threw them out. Anyway, what does this have to do with eating backward? As I was growing up, my mother always emphasized that we should eat everything on our plate. ...

Sweet Meat!
Sweet Meat!Squash, that is. I have no idea if this variety of squash has a technical name, but my favorite produce stand calls it "sweet meat" squash. If you find one, buy it, cook it, eat it! It is the best squash I have ever tasted. I had one a few days ago. Yesterday I went back to buy 2 more. One of them (the one in the picture) had a small "nasty" spot on it (on the top, a little left of center). The clerk asked me if I wanted to trade it for another one, and I sort of ...

YUCK!
Stinking nasty halloween candy. I usually don't "do" halloween, but got candy to hand out tonight so the kids in the building won't terrorize us and destroy the stuff on our patio. So I ate some candy. I stayed green so far, though. I was able to talk myself into laying down the candy after a while, and have some tea with sipping chocolate and molasses along with a vitatop. At least those give me some nutrients while I'm enjoying the chocolate. Having them with broccoli to get my C up sorta sucks, though. LOL ...

Creamy Chicken Rice Soup Recipe
So I made this soup today with the homemade broth I made yesterday and let me tell you - this is a delicious soup! My favorite of the soup was that it is creamy! I have indicated in parentheses the substitutions I made for the ingredients that I did not have and I used skim milk to reduce the fat and calories.

Creamy Chicken Rice Soup Recipe

•5 Servings
•Prep/Total Time: 30 min.
Ingredients
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 medium carrot, chopped
1 celery rib, chopped
1 tablespoon canola oil (olive oil)
1/2 teaspoon minced garlic
2 cans (14-1/2 ounces each) ...

Fueling workouts
Blaizin' said something in a post that got me thinking. She asked if I "fueled" my workouts.

What?

So... I'm assuming it means eating right before a workout.

I just read Kel's post about eating 400 cals so she could run, and I thought I'd post my question to the group:

What do you guys do to fuel your workout? Is it a before and after thing? How long before? What if it's a super early workout and you can only have a small bite before- do you do a lot after- and if so, what?

thanks guys!!! ...

Out for a while but back
I've missed a couple of days logging. I know they were not green days either. I had a long and difficult delivery out-of-town with little chance to eat balanced foods or exercise.

But I'm back now and hopefully can get back to green. I also had a great workout this morning at the gym.

My husband has been keeping his blood sugar low. I'm so proud of him. Even when I was away he kept up with it and he exercised every day.

I hope my few days off didn't hurt my team too bad.

Looking Ahead
Looking AheadWe are coming to a close to the Green Day Challenge and it is time to look ahead to our next steps on the green path to health. I hope everyone has used the challenge to learn new things and to support your commitment to healthy eating and lasting change.

I think for the most part, the challenge, in and of itself will probably not be the key to lasting change. However, taking the knowledge that was learned during the challenge and continuing to build on it IS what will likely change our lives for the better.

These are the things ...

3 JOBS
as you all know, i work three jobs. it is not because i need the money, it is because i have so much free time and i would rather spend it at work then lying on the couch with a bag of Cheetos.

at these jobs, i have to talk a lot and my mouth always gets dry or scratchy. as a teacher, i go to the vending machine for snapple fruit punch, as a retail associate, i grab the diet coke, as a sunday teacher, i deal with it.

i have decided today that my love of diet coke is now ...
