Giving Thanks
From the philosopher, Howard Thurman

THANKSGIVING

"Today, I make my Sacrament of Thanksgiving.
I begin with the simple things of the days;
Fresh air to breathe, cool water to drink, the taste of food; the protection of houses and clothes, the comforts of home.
For these, I make an act of Thanksgiving this day.

I bring to mind all the warmth of human kind that I have known; my Mother's arms, the strength of my Father, the playmates of my childhood.

The wonderful stories brought to me from the lives of many who talked of days gone by when fairies and giants and all kinds ...

Divorce
My parents filed for a divorce a few weeks ago, actually they filed on their 20th anniversary. funny how life works.

anyways I was wondering if anybody has any advice for me.

How do I comfort my parents? Its like they are both in greiving. They werent ugly with eachother until the other day. My dad took off, hes coming back tomorrow though because he said he couldnt be away from his family.

I am praying for them both, hard. What can I say to them or do for them to ease the pain they are in?

Its a complicated matter not ...

Mind Body Connection??
Does anyone else have a mind body connection problem?

What is wrong with me? I should be so happy. I am having trouble accepting my weight loss. My clothes all don't fit me and I've dropped several clothing sizes all at once.

I just dropped my wedding rings and engagement ring off at the jeweler on Wednesday to have them sized down because they are driving me nuts spinning on my finger and I'm afraid I'll lose them. It took me two weeks to get myself to drop them off.

To sentimental I guess. Perhaps that's my problem right there. ...

Not quite SERVING up a SMILE...
OK, I felt naked toward the end of the week. Like there was something I was supposed to have done...get dressed? Hate that dream. Nope, I guess I just really felt the need to write so I added a Country Tart installment late last night: Inviting the Food Snob to Dinner

I do gripe about sneaky food manufacturers and the Corn Refiners Association and I should warn you that it isn't quite as smiley as perhaps I could have been. It is more of an answer to the many friends and family members that I have that comment about ...

sometimes i hate payday...payday is when we go out for dinner...just twice a month we can go eat something we know we shouldnt....used to do that several times a week, then down to once or twice a week, now down to twice a month, hopefully soon we can decrease that to once a month. or im going to just have to insist on going somewhere i can just make better choices. i honestly just prefer to cook my own food at home these days. then at least i know what im eating and exactly how it is prepared. 3 days ...

Obsessing needs to stop!
For the past 2 weeks now I haven't dropped a pound.

All that after starting to exercise after 5 weeks of surgery and being sick recovery.

So, I've been exercising for 2 weeks 5 days 60 minutes each and staying green on my calories and all other areas.

I've been playing with the exercise logs and my activity level. I wonder if I don't have it all accurate. It's hard to know how many hours I spend in light activity and which exercise to enter on the logs when I have to guess which exercise matches the one I actually did.

I weigh myself ...

Lab Results ... Finally
Well, after 2 weeks and not getting any test results in the mail, I called my doctor's office for my lab test results. The assistant said they don't notify if the test is normal (good sign), but that if I wanted to see my results, I could logon to a website, and she gave me the login instructions.

Here are my results:
Total Cholesterol (Normal is less than 200):
April: 262
October: 192
HOLY COW! A 70 point drop in 6 months!!!!

HDL (Greater than 35)
April: 76
October: 43
YAY, I think.

LDL (Less than 130)
April: 171
October: 128
HOLY GUACOMOLE COW!

Hypochondriac
We are all about getting healthy and feeling good here on NM. This is a funny story about my brother.

My youngest brother was a true hypochondriac as a young kid through mid-teenage years. He had every illness or disease imaginable, from cancer, to diabetes, and aids, if you described an illness within his ears reach, then he had it.

When he was 13 years old, he was certain he had something wrong with his health. He requested to go to the doctor because he thought he had aids. My mom said she would take him, because she felt it was ...

I really hate the way Myers portrays her lead (female) character in these books. i think my intense hatred has ultimately sucked me into them.

well, at least said lead female has no body issues. she does have self-confidence issues, but body issues isn't one of them, unless you count being less pretty than a vampire, which, let's be for real, you just can't do that. srsly.

(About 23 years ago) It was about 6:30 pm after a Thanksgiving dinner and my mom and my aunt were anxious to get out of the house to make to 7:00 pm Bingo. I told her I would clean up after the meal, not to worry. So out the door they go. A few moments later my youngest brother comes running in, “Mark! Mark! Need support - any vegans here on NM ??
Hello !
I was wondering if anybody here on NM is a vegan, either a recent one or an old hand at it ??

I read something so disturbing, so sadistic, so unbelievable in the Kathy Freston book, Quatum Healing that I know that being a vegetarian is no longer good enough for me.

I need to progress onto veganism, and while I can get a lot of info from books and the internet, was just wondering if there were any vegans here, that could lend me a bit of support/ideas/suggestions.....as I transition to a new way of eating and living.

Thanks !

Warning. This is some what of a complaint. I just got off the phone with my mother and I am really annoyed.

We spend each Thanksgiving with my husband's family. His mother is one of 8. All her siblings still get together every year. They rent out a hall. Last year we had 135 people. Dan's aunts cook the turkeys and hams. Everyone else is assigned to prepare a serving tray of all the other Thanksgiving dishes. For the last 10+ years, I have made salad. My mother goes to my brother's house, who's wife is a professional chef and ...

I've been gone entirely too long. It's amazing how distractions start to snowball and take you away from some really important things....like eating right and exercising! I've loved this site and followed it pretty closely. Even started training for a half marathon....then had a re-injury of my back. Talk about depressing. I've had 2 back surgeries so this was very concerning to me...especially because I started to feel the pain after a lousy run. Well, I feel a little quilty and I thought I should go ahead and get it all off my chest. Why do I feel guilty? Did I dive head first into a chocolate cake and not log it? How I miss my grandparents. My grandfather was quiet and soft spoken, my grandmother was fiesty and spoke her mind, spanish cuss words and all!

When we were kids very rare were visits to the doctor. When we had fever, my grandmother would come over to the house of the sick child/ren and she would peel potatoes, slice them very thin, and soak them in apple cider vinegar, then place them in either a bandana or she would cut up the cotton cloth diapers to serve like a bandana. logging consistency - HOLIDAY CHALLENGE
Hey everyone, here are the rules for the upcoming logging consistency challenge. It will now be called the Holiday Challenge, so look for a weekly post by that name. The spaghetti squash not a 100% successful. :(
I liked it though. My son did not dislike it, he said it was different. My husband said it was a lot like eating pumpkin with butter and cheese, and he did not care for it.

I added butter, fresh parmesan cheese, and pepper. Oh well, I have plenty for my snacks or lunches. ...

Quiet mind
Quiet mindI have been doing a bit more reflection the past week or so. As I sat quietly and paid more attention, I noticed a significant change in my thought patterns.

Always before, whether dieting or not, I constantly thought about food and what I would eat next. I could be in the middle of Thanksgiving dinner, feeling stuffed to the brim but always, always, ALWAYS also thinking about how soon we would have some pie, how much stuffing would be left over, and what wonderful latenight sandwiches I was going to have later. When I cooked, I didn't just think ...

A small light at the end of a dark tunnel
Hi all.
I have been in a very bad place, emotionally, financially, spiritually for the last 18 months.

I quit my secure gov't job with all the perks to move to England to marry in the summer of 2007. The marriage was called off at the last minute leaving me in a very bad spot. I have no health insurance, no job, no income and am living and have been living on my savings.

Anyhow, long story short, I am a former civil servant and that is really the only kind of work that suits me. I am not into corporate America, I ...

Spaghetti Squash
So I decided I would cook spaghetti squash for the first time, I will season it with a little butter, parmesan cheese, and pepper.

But wholy smokes! Is cutting that thing in half usually that difficult, or did I get one that was not ready to be cooked? It is bright yellow on the outside.

Thank goodness my son was home, because he took his time and finally cut it open for me. His dad taught him how to handle a knife. He saw me trying to cut it open and stood next to me and quietly said "Mom, put ...

From the Matava Family
Thank you to everyone for your comments, your emails, your Facebook comments, well-wishes, love and support.

I have the absolute worst luck with cars. I cannot count how many accidents I have been in on two hands and most of them are inarguably not my fault. I have a magnetism about me, I suppose, and cars just always seem to love the one I am driving. The car I was driving yesterday is my very first new car and I was 34 before I got it. I cannot imagine that it will be salvageable (but am keeping my fingers crossed). ...

Misadventures with Candida Wakefield (NOV 09)
Misadventures with Candida Wakefield (NOV 09)Fuzzy thoughts from a Brain on Percocet

Why the beginning of my most recent story is yet another walkabout, I cannot for the life of me tell you. But that is where my poor fuzzy brain wishes to start, so there we shall begin.

One would think that after 40 years of owning animals and 14 years of being a veterinarian, there may be a small amount of animal logic hidden somewhere in me, but apparently that is not the case. Certainly it was not the other week when I felt sorry for my poor ponies. “Poor ponies,” said I, as I ...

Sad 'so long' to Andy
Good morning, my dear, sweet family!!!

I just saw Andy off on his journey this morning, and I am so sad. Thought I would post this so I can take my mind off him leaving for a while.

We had such a wonderful visit, as he has already told you part of. He stayed over one extra night, partly because of the weather and partly so we could visit and hug some more. I think we overdid the hugging, way more than was requested of us. The rest of them, the extras, I’m claiming for myself. He is such a sweet and ...

The Scale Doesn't Always Tell the Truth
I can finally see an example of where progress can not be measured by a scale alone. According to the scale, I have gained about 4 pounds since October 1st. I have been exercising fairly diligently and for the most part, I have been staying around the weight loss calorie value (a couple of times I have gone slightly over my maintenance calories, but what is a person to do).

After reading mommyof2boys' post, I am wondering if anyone would be interested in another challenge. I propose that we have a consistent logging challenge for those of us who lack motivation. I know I could really use this. The challenge would include a month worth of completely logged days (the good, the bad, and the ugly). Growing Your Own Fresh SproutsI remembered I used to grow my own sprouts in my hippie years and thought with the winter coming on and gardens at rest that some of you might like to try growing these healthy sprouts for your salads and sandwiches. I also sprout other seeds like radish and fennel. You could sprout quinoa, garbanzo beans or other grains too. If you like to bake bread you could add sprouted wheat berries to the dough and have a wonderful homemade whole grain bread.

It is fun and nutritious! Kids love to watch these grow.

As we find ourselves staring winter in the face, I would like to remind you not to throw out old winter "stuff." I don't particularly like to donate things to thrift stores, as the really poor people who need the stuff can't afford the thrift stores. Any useable blankets, sleeping bags, coats, sweaters, jeans, and yes, even socks and underwear can be washed and donated to a homeless shelter or clothing bank. A couple of Thanksgiving suggestions from GouldthorpMy own experience (as well as that of many of my friends and family) has been a tendency to overindulge at this time of year and the internal conversation with ourselves goes something like, “Well, it’s the holidays; there’ll be parties and get-togethers; I don’t want to offend anyone by not eating what they made for the party; I’ll only have one bite of everything; anyway it’s only six weeks until the New Year and then I’ll start a diet as one of my New Year’s resolutions.”
