TGIF with Kel 11/6/09: It's Not Fair!
TGIF with Kel 11/6/09: It's Not Fair! “It’s not fair!”

I stood in line yesterday at Starbucks behind a very attractive 20-something year old woman. I was waiting my turn to buy a bottle of water to go with the well balanced lunch that Ben and I would be sharing. Her order? It was some venti triple mocha nonfat with whip something or other and an oatmeal cookie.

This attractive 20-something year old was also thin; she was thin enough that I stared at her for perhaps a little longer than would be appropriate. Yeah, I was green yesterday; with envy.

As Ben and I sat ...

SERVING up a SMILE: 11/03/09, Avoiding the Culture Shock
SERVING up a SMILE: 11/03/09, Avoiding the Culture Shock[Pictured above: a woman’s Halloween offerings to trick-or-treaters in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn.]

Falling in love is a feat that usually does not happen overnight. For example, I love to run but I didn’t always feel this way. In days past, I would run because I felt I needed the exercise in order to balance my consumption of all the wrong foods. Over time, being able to tolerate running turned into an occasional “runner’s high.” Now I find comfort in the sound of the rhythm of my feel against the pavement and the resonance of my steadied breath. I ...

TGIF with Kel 10/30/09: Who Told You that You are Fat?
TGIF with Kel 10/30/09: Who Told You that You are Fat?I have a very vivid memory when I was a young child; I remember sitting at the dinner table and listening to my parents talk about me.

“I am going to have to start shopping in the husky department.”

“She is fine. Leave her alone.”

My mom was right; she would have to shop in the husky department. I was larger than other kids my age. I was taller and no doubt heavier. When I look back at pictures, I do not see a fat child; I see a child that was taller, and indeed heavier than the other kids, ...

SERVING up a SMILE: 10/27/09, Along for the Ride
SERVING up a SMILE: 10/27/09, Along for the RideYou’ve begun a journey toward improving your health. You’ve made positive changes and are feeling great. Like any long journey, you have devoted weeks, maybe months--or even years--getting ready to depart. Here you sit at the depot waiting to board and head toward the next stop along the way. You are seriously prepared, too. A bag full of green snacks; enough fruits, veggies and high fiber grub for three or four of you to munch on. You pull out the map; yes, it will be possible to hit a Trader Joe’s at just about every stop. Yep, nothing but smooth ...

TGIF with Kel 10/23/2009 What's Your Excuse?
TGIF with Kel 10/23/2009 What's Your Excuse? What is Your Excuse?

I like reading “Oxygen” Magazine. It has a lot of clean eating recipe ideas, as well as strength training moves. I picked up the November 2009 copy at the airport on Tuesday.

It has been ages since I worked out. Sure, I have done cardio, but not strength training. I love how I feel after a good workout. I just hate the thought of going to the gym. It has been so nice outside, and to be back in…wait a minute, am I making excuses?

As I read the magazine, on the Publisher’s Page, there it was…”No ...

SERVING up a SMILE: 10/20/09 Oh, Great Grains!
SERVING up a SMILE: 10/20/09 Oh, Great Grains!“You have a grain problem like I have a shoe problem,” my friend, we’ll call her Kel said upon seeing this photograph. Much like any other addiction I’ve eventually admitted to, reality sunk in as someone else stated aloud what I secretly feared inside.

Before the photographic evidence presented itself, I had stopped by the health food store to pick up some Kamut for a friend of mine to try. I was slowly perusing the aisles and taking in all the latest offerings. I saw a few things I had never even considered trying such as rye grain and sorghum.. ...
