Heart Rate Monitors
Hi everybody,

Since there's always lots of talk about Heart Rate Monitors, I'm going to create this page as a more permanent feature so we can all benefit from keeping the discussion in one place. I've started off by creating a few links for HRMs that have been talked about lately. If you use any of these, go ahead and tell us what you think of them in the comments below. If there are other monitors that you use or want to know more about, let me know and I'll update the list. Thanks!

NutriMirror and Kids
The question came up a few times last week about whether NutriMirror works for people under 18, or whether we planned to create a version of the site for kids or teens. While there have been discussions about that, it's not anywhere near the top of the to-do list.

However, I wanted to give you all some background about why a teen/children site would be different from the current site, and why NutriMirror requires members to be at least 18 years old. It gets a bit technical with talk of metabolism and nutrient needs and alternative BMI charts, but if you're ...

States and Cities/I keep getting edited!
The survey I took on “Where are you from?” is way out of date. Let’s start again and get a little more info. I only asked for states back then.

If you would give me your city and state we would have a better idea of how many people we have in each area.

This will help all of you wanting to host your own events. Stay posted.

Suggestions from the man at the top:

If you can't make it to Southern California but would still like to take a walk on August 1st
and want company, this would be a good place to make ...

Reply to: Where's the Rest of the Fat?

User sianna writes:

I have a question regarding fat and the nutrition labels…

Take the "New York Strip Steak Grilled (Home Made)" label for example. It states that there is a total of 8 grams of fat and it shows that there is 3 grams of saturated fat. Where is the other 5 grams of fat?

Surely it's not mono or poly unsaturated fat, or worse yet a trans fat, some labels show all the fats and the grams still don’t always add up to the total fat.

So what's the deal is there some secret fat out there? It doesn't matter what

From jim...re the Blood Type Diet post
Without jumping into the fray and taking a side on the lively Blood Type Diet post, let me say this about NM. Fundamentally NM is, as one of the comments to that thread stated, about two things only: balancing calories for a healthy weight AND nutritional balancing. The Gold Standard for determining nutritional balance, at the heart of the NM system, is the Dietary Reference Intake Tables published by the National Academy of Sciences.

If one does not accept the math and science behind calorie balancing and the validity of the DRI Tables, NM has NOTHING to offer you.

It is ...

New Food and Recipe Troubles -- UPDATED
Hi all,

Some of you have noticed some problems with adding new foods today. I think we've got it all working properly now, but those of you who managed to post a new food or recipe this morning should double-check to make sure the information is still correct. There's a good chance you'll find some errors, and you might have to delete an entry or two.

Sorry for the trouble, and please let me know if there are any more problems with this.

Thanks,
Mike

Calorie Basis for Percentages

A USER ASKS

I noticed that the %s for the various nutritional measurements are calculated based on my calories for weight maintenance, but I would like to see them calculated based on my calories recommended to reach my WEIGHT GOAL. The green and red in the charts are helpful, but would be even more helpful if they were based on what I need to intake to LOSE! Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

OUR ANSWER

Many of the nutrients that we track have targets that are independent of calories eaten. With cholesterol, sodium, and all the vitamins and minerals, you're looking at fixed numbers,

Carbs / Fat / Protein Override for Special Needs

A USER ASKS

Since I am a Bariatric patient who has had weight loss surgery my nutrition goals are a bit different then a lot of folks. I need to reset and lock my settings to reflect the following:

Calories = 500 - 800 per day
Carbs = 40 GM per day
Protein = 70 GM per day
Fat = 30 GM per day

OUR ANSWER

I thought it would be interesting to show everybody the math behind the this question. We'll start with some basic facts:

1 gram of carbohydrates = 4 calories
1 gram of protein = 4 calories
1 gram of fat = 9 calories

Now those numbers

Calorie numbers
A user asks:

How do I change the recommended calorie intake number?

We answer:

The calorie intake numbers that we use on the site are calculated automatically based on several factors.

We start by estimating your Resting Metabolic Rate, which is calculated by taking into account your age, sex, weight, and height. There are several different formulas that can be used to compute this RMR number, and we allow you to override our estimate on this page if you know of a more precise value for your own RMR:

Resting Metabolic Rate

Once we know your RMR, we take into account your normal lifestyle activities ...

Adding Vitamins to Your Log

A user asks:

I take complete multivitamin supplements. According to the label the tablets provide 100% of vitamins and minerals except vitamin K. I am diabetic, and would like to keep track of the supplements as I do not take any medication except my vitamin tablet and an occasional asprin tablet. Question: Is there a way to enter the components of any food supplements I take?

We answer:

Yes, you can use NutriMirror to track your vitamin and supplement intake. We have some supplements listed in our database already, but if the one you take is not currently listed, you'll need to add
